Black-breasted Puffleg (Eriocnemis nigrivestis) hummingbird is found only in Ecuador, one of the most endangered bird species in the country, considered Critically Endangered Species.

Today, it has been found only in the northwestern flanks of the volcano Pichincha and in the Cordillera de Toisán above the valley of Intag, although the possibility exists that inhabit the forest remnants in the Atacazo.

Is found both in mature forests and in forest edges, mainly between 2850 and 3500 m. Make local movements that may be related to periods of flowering of certain species of plants. The main threat to the Black-breasted Puffleg (Eriocnemis nigrivestis) is the loss and fragmentation of habitat is the result of deforestation by poor agricultural practices, logging for charcoal production, fires during the dry season. In addition, the Black-breasted Puffleg (Eriocnemis nigrivestis) is vulnerable to the effects of climate change especially since recent studies indicate that the temperature rise caused by climate change will be greater in the upper parts, which mostly affect this and other species, especially food sources.

It should also be mentioned that the Black-breasted Puffleg (Eriocnemis nigrivestis) has been designated as "Ave de Quito" by the Illustrious Municipality of Quito.
